EU - Bytes of Beef

On 30 August, the European Commission adopted a proposal that would provide a legal framework for the voluntary introduction of an electronic identification (EID) system for cattle. The implementation of the system on a continental scale would improve the current traceability system for cattle and bovine products, such as beef. It would be beneficial for farmers, too, as it would simplify administrative procedures, therefore reducing the administrative burden. The Commission proposal would also allow member states to introduce a mandatory EID regime at national level.

Health and Consumer Policy Commissioner John Dalli said: "When implemented, this proposal will facilitate the reporting of animal movements to the central data base. This will mean better and faster traceability of infected animals and/or infected food, which will allow us to react rapidly and fend off any future potential risks to the food chain.”

Aside from the EID, the proposal would also introduce changes to labeling further to reduce the unnecessary administrative burden. Bovine EID is intended to strengthen consumer protection, improve disease prevention and control and crisis management. It is also intended to foster better competitiveness in the sector and improve trade perspectives.
